The word Survey refers to consider something in an inclusive way, or to look or inspect something carefully. Similarly, it is used to review, plot, sketch or view something or an act of observing, seeing or looking something.

In statistics surveys are used to gather quantitative information regarding some items or its population. Surveys related to human populations and their institutions are often used in various disciplines like social science, health, polls, and marketing research.

Another technique or science known as land surveying or surveying is used to precisely determine the three dimensional or terrestrial space position in points.

Usually, the act of surveying is conducted to have a general view or to have a particular view. It can also be called an examination or a kind of official examination of a particular thing or part of this thing. It ascertains the quantity, quality or condition of the thing for instance a survey of roads, a survey of the stores or a survey of the roads etc.

According to wiktionary, survey is a process of collecting information without verification only just on the basis of examining.  The basic purpose of survey is to know about the way people or some other things are tended to and what are the current trends specific to something.

Survey is also used to determine the area, boundaries, or elevations of something by the measurement of angles and distances. In such surveys, techniques of trigonometry and geometry are used quite often.
