What is Mean

This item was filled under Education

Mean has two relevant meanings in statistics: it is used for arithmetic mean and similarly we use the term population mean for a random variable’s expected value.  Average is also denoted some times as mean. It is not right to reckon mean as only specific to arithmetic mean.

Some other types of averages are mean, median and mode. Different measures of spread like range, interquartile range or standard deviation are also used for simple statistical analysis. For random variable with a real value X, the expectation of X is reckoned as mean and in a data set mean number is obtained by dividing the number of observations. It is frequently quoted with the standard deviation and it presents the central location of the data, while its spread is described by the standard deviation.

Mean deviation is an alternative measure of dispersion that is equal to the average absolute deviation from the mean.

Aside from statistics, means are used in many other kinds of analysis and geometry and there are many different kinds of mean that have been particularly developed for this purpose and that are not used quite frequently in statistics for this purpose.

The word mean also refers to different other things in different context. It is used to indicate or represent a particular sense. It also intends to tell about a specific idea in writing or speech. It is also used to express some intentions or opinion.  It also expresses the meaning of a cause or sign of something. The word also refers to unkind, close fisted and cruel person.
