What Is IVF

In Vitro Fertilization is abbreviated as IVF and it’s a method in which sperm and egg union can cause fertilization of egg or embryo in a lab rather than natural pregnancy. This process is used when couples face difficulty in natural conceiving and it is usually considered an option when other tried methods don’t seem to work. It is one of the most costly methods for conceiving a baby, and the pity about it is that it often proves unsuccessful.

IVF is used mostly in humans and this process is consisted of various steps that also include medications for inducing ovulation in women and collection of eggs. In some women donor eggs are used instead of their own eggs especially when they don’t produce their own eggs. After this harvesting of eggs is done and the collected sperm is used that can also come from some donor. Objects like Petri dishes are used to introduce sperm and eggs. Then it comes time for the selection of healthiest looking embryos and their reintroduction in a woman’s uterus.  Most of the time, doctors introduced several fertilized eggs as they enhance the odds of at least one the embryos implantation.

There are nearly 30% to 50% chances of success for conceiving with a single IVF procedure and women aged below 40 often tend to higher end of this conceiving rate.  Many people are of the view about this procedure that pregnancy is often achieved even after undergoing three cycles or attempts and in some other cases it can take even more time than this. However, some women get pregnant even in the first or second try. This method is being continuously improved by the scientists and it is expected that IVF success rates will further improve in the coming days.
