What is Indie
Indie rock is a short form of the term independent rock which represents those rock musicians who are often unsigned or get signed independently for some record labels instead of some major signed record labels. Lo-fi, math rock, C86, post-rock and sadcore are some genres and subgenres which are related to indie rock and its some other associated categories are indie pop and shoegazing.
The artists who relate to this form put a premium to maintain good control over their careers and music and they seem to rely on word of mouth, touring and airplay independently and on college radio stations for the their promotion. Some of them have to move on major labels while others often succeed to win prior independent success according to their set terms and conditions. The musicians belong to this genre have to follow quite a strict do-it-yourself ethic and they are not willing to change sounds to get accordance with the popular trends.
This kind of music is also known as college rock, as most of these indie rock artists seemed to play on heavy rotation for their college radio stations. 10,000 Maniacs and REM are two early indie rock bands that seemed to meet nice acclaim on college radio stations. Stone, the Cure and the smiths are some other well known indie rock artists that belonged to the Britain. These various artists seldom or never made their appearance on the Billboard, but various college stations have the lists of their popular songs.
A large number of styles are being used these days in indie rock music and the style like low-fi has been typified by different bands like Pavement and Sonic Youth etc. Some other artists like Joanna Newsom and Devandra Berhhardt were some other artists who seemed to perform folk music on experimental basis and it was labeled as freak folk.
