What is HDL
High density lipoprotein or HDL is commonly known as good cholesterol, the higher level of this kind of cholesterol are considered useful for the body, contrary to LDL or low-density lipoproteins whose lower levels are considered better for the body.
Because of HDL, the higher amounts of cholesterol return to the liver for emission and it happens through the gastrointestinal system. HDL helps to remove the cholesterol which can harm the arteries and reduces the flow of the blood and because of these helpful activities, it is called good cholesterol.
A simple blood test is conducted to know about the levels of HDL. A physician can order a blood test for screening purpose as well as part of some routine physical test. Lipid profile is the name of this usually used test to know about the amount of good cholesterol.
Usually, a 12-hour fasting and temporary elimination of some medications are required when a doctor requires conducting a lipid profile. Cholesterol testing is considered quite important especially for the patients who are at risk of heart disease.
