A descriptor for websites on the internet or a local subnetwork is referred as domain. In LAN or local area network, the term domain refers to a subnetwork that is developed with a group of severs and clients that act under a central security database control.
The centralized server which is also known as the controller of the domain, users are authenticated in the domain only once instead of get authentication several times on a individual servers and services. The user is accepted by the individual servers and services after getting approval from the domain controller.
While domain is known as the part of every network address on the internet that include website addresses, Internet protocols addresses like SSH, FTP, IRC, email addresses etc. All the devices share a mutual part of the address that is known as URL and it is said to be in the similar domain.
Usually, these are domain register who offer domains of some name, and if you want to obtain a domain, first you need to check its availability, and then you can make the purchase of it if your selected domain name is available there. .com, .edu, .uk, .net are called the levels from which the internet domains are organized. ICANN or Internet Corportaion For Assigned Names and Numbers is the governing body for domain names.
