What is Carbon

This item was filled under Science

Carbon is known as a natural nonmetallic element that is abundantly found and forms the basis of almost all living organisms.  There are four elements which are abundantly found in the universe and carbon is one of them. With its carbon cycle, this element plays a vital role to keep the planet stable as well as healthy. This cycle explains about the connection in various organisms found on the earth, and it has an extremely complex form. It appears in somewhat innumerable forms and most of consumers know well about it.

The atomic number of this abundantly found element is six, and at the periodic table, it is recognized by “C.” Carbon molecules have such a structure which can instantly bond with many other elements, and thus they form thousands of compounds. These molecules also tie themselves with elements in a large number of ways and create many different forms of it that also includes diamonds which is quite well known as the hardest substance on the Earth. Similarly, it exists in the form of graphite which is one of the softest materials on the Earth. The formation of newer shapes depends on the other elements which carbon tends to make a bond with and it also depends on the way this bond is formed.

Carbon is a must part of almost every living organism, and these organisms keep containing this element. Petroleum, limestone, coal are fossilized forms of many different living organisms which existed millions of years back. With its many different forms carbon itself has been found non-reactive, but when it bonds with some other elements like hydrogen, it becomes quite reactive and reactivity is largely utilized in many different industries.
