What is BMI

This item was filled under Health

Body Mass Index has a common acronym BMI. Body Mass Index is a number which is calculated on the basis of your height, weight that correlates to your total weight percentage which is due to fat and contrary to bone, muscles or organs. Persons with higher BMIs have a higher fat percentage in the body. People with the BMI of 20 are considered underweight.

People who have BMI between 20 and 25 are considered having a healthy weight according to their height. Similarly, those who have a BMI above 25 are considered overweight while those with 35 are obese.
You can find BMI calculators and charts on many different diet and health sites. The truth is that these calculators are roughly translated for your weight right percentages, and there can be many different factors which influence whether your BMI is a true representative of your body fat.

For example, muscles have higher density than fat and they take lesser space and for this very reason a person with heavy muscles may have more weight than an overweight person with same size. Similarly, two different persons with the same BMI could have different percentage of the body fat. In such cases, somewhat more sophisticated equipment are required to calculate the percentage of fat in the body.

Usually, women have more amounts of subcutaneous fat them men especially in some specific areas like hips and breast and for this reason their percentage of the body fat can be higher that may not be reflected in the BMI.

One Comment on “What is BMI”

    While it might not be an accurate representation of body fat, it still shows common sense. I’m a 19 year old. I’m 5′4″ and I weigh 115. BMI is 19.7. Even though it’s still in the upper end of normal, if I gained 25 pounds. I would be chunky. The end of this post seems to make people feel better about where they are on the BMI chart and offers a lot of excuses. Every woman in my family over the age of 30 has a weight problem and not one of them does anything about it because of excuses like these. “Oh I’m not fat, I just have a large chest” is a terrible excuse.

    There’s a large difference in BMI numbers:
    * Underweight = <18.5
    * Normal weight = 18.5-24.9
    * Overweight = 25-29.9
    * Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater

    This difference exists because of differences in body type.
