It carries nutrients, gases and waste materials through the body, and that’s why it is usually thicker than water. Blood has a bit salty taste and 10.6 pints of blood circulate in a fully grown adult body. Blood consists of billions of living cells that float in a liquid known as plasma. The different layers of the blood can be easily seen if a small sample of it is put in a machine known as centrifuge. In this machine, the blood is spun so fast that the red blood cells get separated easily from other constituents of the blood like platelets and the white blood cells.

As red blood cells are heavy and solid parts of the blood, they sink into the bottom, but plasma floats on the top as it’s quite lightweight. The plasma is consisted of 95% water and 5% other dissolved substances that also include salt.

Nearly half volume of the blood is consisted of blood cells like red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Hemoglobin that is an iron containing protein gives red blood cells their red color. These red blood cells are thin in the center and thick at the centre. White blood cells defend body against infections and other intruders, and they have five have five basic kinds that multiply whenever it is required.

Heart pumps the entire quantity of the blood (10pints/units in an adult) through the arteries and to the lungs as well as different other tissues and cells every moment. It performs many vital functions in the body like fighting infections, healing wounds and providing nutrient and oxygen to each and every part of the body. Blood has no substitution and can’t be produced or manufactured artificially.
